Chronolog Citizen Science research

Everyone is a scientist.  We've all asked questions about a natural phenomenon or wondered how something works.  That's the first step in scientific inquiry!  Citizen science is a valuable part of public collaboration that contributes to new knowledge. 

 

Through data monitoring and collection programs,  the public (that's YOU!) helps make strides in positive efforts

on projects great and small.

We invite you to be a citizen scientist for nature with a simple click of your cell phone.

Our recent conservation and remediation project of Emerson Meadow at Demarest Nature Center is the focus of

a phenological study to measure the positive impacts of this ecological restoration.  WHOA!  Big word! 

It's simple, really.  Phenology is the study of the timing and cyclical patterns of events in the natural world,

particularly those related to the annual life cycles of plants, animals, and other living things.

When you upload your photo from the Chronolog station, it will be part of a series of crowd-sourced photos taken by trail visitors.  These are organized into a time-lapse video of the main plot of the Emerson Meadow pollinator garden project and a non-remediated portion of the meadow.  The video tells a composite story of the changes in plant life, of plant growth and health, species interactions, and of seasonal impacts on the area.  The more pictures, the better!

Your contributions will identify management and strategies for the success of this project and for the development of future projects.  These will benefit the long-term study of how this natural area changes over the seasons.  You can check out the time-lapse video anytime.  It's open to everyone!
