Butterfly

Recommended for ages 3-5

Parents, join our wildlife biologist and your little ones on a nature walk as we discover butterflies of all types.  After the walk, learn about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly and its amazing migration of over 1,000 miles!  All participants will decorate his/her very own butterfly souvenir to take home.

All materials provided by SOAR.  Participants and parents are responsible for appropriate footwear and clothing. The nature walk occurs on flat ground; we will be walking through some brush and grass.  It is recommended that you apply bug spray/deterrent before the event and wear appropriate sunscreen.  Water is recommended.

Recommended for ages 6-9

Join us on a nature walk with our resident wildlife biologist and explore the world of the "littles" - insects, seedlings, and other miniature wildlife that help support nature in a big way!   Discover your "mild" side as we gently handle and observe specimens (and maybe a special visitor or two).  Decorate your own World of Littles puzzle and store it in a decorative insect box!

Recommended for ages 6-9

It's a habitat scavenger hunt!  Discover the diversity and creativity of animal homes and habitats.  From high to low and from obvious to hidden, animal homes can be unique and even gravity-defying.  Learn about how animals build homes to meet their particular needs.  Observe and discuss how animals use materials from their environment to build their homes while collecting the same natural materials to create your own version of an insect hotel or small bird/animal place of refuge.

Children with their own binoculars are encouraged to bring them.  All materials provided by SOAR.  Participants and parents are responsible for appropriate footwear and clothing. The short nature walk occurs on flat ground; we will be walking through some brush and grass.  It is recommended that you apply bug spray/deterrent before the event and wear appropriate sunscreen during spring and summer programming.  Layered clothing and waterproof footwear are recommended for late fall and winter programs.  Water is recommended.

Recommended for ages 10-13 and 14-16

Put litter on blast - be a pollution paparazzi!  Technology and art come together to help make the world a cleaner and more beautiful place.  Restore the natural beauty of local parks and contribute to local and global data that records litter.  Armed with the power of your cell phone, use the Litterati app to document and geotag litter during a cleanup and nature walk.  Then design a rock with an inspirational message or picture to take home and place in your garden or potted houseplant.

Participants are welcome to download and become familiar with the Litterati app before the session.  All materials provided by SOAR.  Participants are responsible for appropriate footwear and clothing.  The online geotagging cleanup activity occurs on flat ground and potentially in shallow water and mud.  We will be walking through some brush and grass.  It is recommended that you apply bug spray/deterrent before the event and wear appropriate sunscreen.  Personal hand sanitizer and water are recommended.
